Bundling , or tarrying , is the traditional practice of wrapping two people in a bed together, usually as a part of courting behavior. The tradition is thought to have originated either in the Netherlands or in the British Isles and later became common in colonial United States , especially in Pennsylvania Dutch Country. Some Nebraska Amish may still practice it. When used for courtship, the aim is to allow intimacy without sexual intercourse. It is possible the precedent for bundling came from the biblical story of Ruth and Boaz , in which Ruth, a widow, and Boaz, a wealthy landowner, spend a night together in a grain storage room. Tradition says they did not touch, and the pair later got married.

This middle-aged woman, like many of her generation, married a second cousin and never left her home community. Her granddaughter, by contrast, visited friends in Indiana with a group who hired a van to take a three-day trip out of state, and is now corresponding with a young man she met there. It is no longer uncommon to see young Amish couples spending a summer day at a family recreation spot, such as an amusement park, a Cleveland Indians’ game or the zoo.
Groups of young people often gather for a game of volleyball indoor in the winter and outdoor in the summer followed by a picnic or pizza. Young people can meet a potential spouse when a teenage girl stays with married relative to help after the birth of a baby, or when a teen-age boy spends the summer on a farm to help with the chores. But the youth of today are just as likely to meet in the workplace, such as a shop or factory, or even in an adult-education computer class.
Much of Amish courtship ritual still centers around church and family, as it did for generations past.

The church originated in the late 17th century among followers of Jakob Ammann. Jakob Ammann c. Ammann insisted that any excommunicated Mennonite church member should be shunned socially and that anyone who lied should be excommunicated.
